Start from a picture

The easiest way to make GPS art is to start from a picture. RouteDoodle traces it into a blue line, then finds roads that follow it.

  1. A picture of a dragon laid over a street map
    1 Find a picture
Search for one, or use your own.
  2. The dragon traced as a blue line on the map
    2 It's traced
The blue line is your Wireframe. You can move and reshape it.
  3. The dragon as a red route that follows the streets
    3 Ride the red line
Your Route follows real roads, ready to export.

Which pictures trace well

A black heart, traced by one smooth blue line Traces well
A bold, simple shape
One dark shape on a plain background traces into one clean line. Picture Search looks for these first; you can change that in its options.
A landscape photo, traced into many jagged, stray blue lines Traces badly
A busy photo
Backgrounds, shading and small details turn into jagged, stray lines that are hard to ride.

Tips

  • Use your own picture
Drag one in from another window or from your desktop, or paste a picture's web address onto the map.
  • Make it big
Zoom out and stretch the picture so there's room for its details. The route's length updates as you resize, so stop at a distance you're happy to ride.
  • Outlines and inside lines
Most pictures (PNG, JPEG) are traced around their outline. A drawing saved as SVG keeps its own lines, inside ones too.

S or ' opens Picture Search. Q shows or hides the picture.
