Start from an image

Drop any image onto the map and RouteDoodle traces it into a blue Drawing, the line your Route will follow. Search for an image here, or use your own.

Which images trace well

A black heart, traced by one smooth blue line Traces well
A bold, simple shape
One dark shape on a plain background traces into one clean line. Image Search looks for these first; you can change that in its options.
A landscape photo, traced into many jagged, stray blue lines Traces badly
A busy photo
Backgrounds, shading, and small details turn into jagged, stray lines that are hard to ride.

Tips

  • Use your own image
Drag one in from another window or from your desktop, or paste an image's web address onto the map.
  • Where it lands
On an empty map, a new image goes where it follows the roads best in the part of the map you can see, and the Spots window opens so you can try other places. To have it land in the middle of the map instead, turn off Suggest Spots for a new image in the settings.
  • When there's a doodle already
A new image lands in the middle of the map and takes the place of whatever part of your doodle it covers; the rest stays. To have it replace the whole doodle, or join it without removing anything, change A new image in the settings.
  • Make it big
Zoom out and stretch the image so there's room for its details. The route's length updates as you resize, so stop at a distance you're happy to ride.
  • Outlines and inside lines
Most images (PNG, JPEG) are traced around their outline. An image saved as SVG keeps its own lines, inside ones too.

F or ' opens Image Search. Q shows or hides the image.
