Map Layers for GPS Art

RouteDoodle has map layers designed for GPS art. They work together, over any map style, or over a Blank one for zero distractions.

Ground around the branches of a creek shaded green, with the creek and the land along it left white

Passable Ground Press G

Shades in green the ground your route can get across without going far out of its way, and leaves bare what you'd have to go around.

It's the quickest way to find room for a drawing. Look for a shaded area big enough for your drawing, and keep your lines off the bare patches. It looks the same at every zoom, so you can zoom out to scout a whole city.

To choose how far out of the way is too far, set Passable Ground: farthest around in the settings.

The same place, with green lines for every street and path around the creek's branches, and the highways in gray

Roads Press R

Every road and path you can bike or run on, in green, from cycleways to driveways. Roads you can't use, like freeways, are a faint gray. Arrows mark one-way streets when zoomed in.

One way to make GPS art is to stare at a map and look for shapes that pop out (pareidolia). Driving maps aren't good for this because they hide small roads, and cycling maps aren't good because they show only bike lanes. RouteDoodle's Roads Layer keeps every small road even zoomed out, since they matter as much as the big ones. You can also print it out for sketching on paper.

The same streets, with strong purple lines along the creek's branches, where few streets cross

Barriers Press B

Purple lines through the places the roads don't connect across: a freeway, a railway, a river, a cemetery wall. The stronger the line, the farther you'd have to go to get around it, and a gap in a line is a way across, like a bridge.

Where your drawing crosses a barrier with no way across, the route has to go the long way around, and your art gets a bulge. Move or rotate your doodle so its lines cross at the gaps.
