Start your doodle

Every doodle starts as a blue Drawing. RouteDoodle traces it from an image, or you draw it yourself. As soon as there is a Drawing, RouteDoodle makes a red Route along real roads. There are four ways to start:

Search for an image

Type what you'd like to draw. Image Search looks for bold, simple images first, the kind that trace well.

Use your own image

Drag an image onto the map from another window or from your computer, or paste an image, or its web address, onto the map.Copy an image's web address, then paste it into Image Search and search for it.

Have AI make one

Describe what you'd like in a few words, and AI makes a simple image for you to trace.

Draw it yourself

Turn on the Pencil and draw right on the map. A stroke that starts at the end of your line carries it on.

Not sure what to draw? Search for one of these:

Once your doodle is on the map, RouteDoodle looks for good spots for it.

Which images trace well

A black heart, traced by one smooth blue line Traces well
A bold, simple shape
One dark shape on a plain background traces into one clean line.
A landscape photo, traced into many jagged, stray blue lines Traces badly
A busy photo
Backgrounds, shading, and small details turn into jagged, stray lines that are hard to follow.

Good to know

  • When there's a doodle already
A new image goes in the middle of the map. If that's on top of part of your doodle, the image takes the place of the lines there. If it's beside your doodle, the image joins it as more lines. If you've moved the map away from your doodle, the image takes its place, so you can start a new one anywhere. To have a new image always replace your doodle, always join it, or replace only the part it covers, change A new image in the settings.
  • Outlines and inside lines
Most images (PNG, JPEG) are traced around their outline. An image saved as SVG keeps its own lines, inside ones too.

F or ' opens Image Search. P turns the Pencil on and off. Q shows or hides the image.
